Growing onion-batun in the garden, in the garden, on the farm or in the cottage does not present much difficulty. It is not exacting in leaving and can grow on one site till 7 years in a row. About how and when to plant it, the rules of care and collection time will be discussed in the article.

What are the main characteristics of onion batun?

It refers to perennial plants, but if you wish, you can plant it for one year, and then just uproot. This method allows to change the landing site from year to year. The people are also called fist bow or Tatar. The homeland of culture is Asia. There are several of its subspecies, among which the most enduring is the Russian onion batun. It does not survive only in the cold northern regions of the planet, where there is little sun and almost always cold. Other types are also popular: "April", "Giant", "Bahia Verde", "Seryozha".

It has an underdeveloped root crop - the onion in the ground is small, unlike onions, so the food mainly uses green leaves and a stem. The largest crop can be obtained for 2-3 year of cultural development. Onion seed bud, which appears on its stem in summer or closer to autumn, has a spherical shape and consists of many small fragrant flowers.

Seeds and fertilizer for growing onion batun

It is better to grow a bat onion in a light, nutritious soil: sandy loam, loam, abundantly fertilized with nitrogen compounds. Acidic soil can harm it, so in this case lime or dolomite flour is introduced. In clayey soil it grows poorly, and in sandy it develops quickly, but it produces more flower stalks than leaves, which reduces its yield. Batun grows well in places where previously grown tomatoes, cucumbers or lettuce.

Before planting, dig up the soil and loosen. Plant it either as a perennial culture, or as a perennial.

  • Growing an annual plant involves planting seeds in the soil in the first spring days, when it is still cold, but the snow has melted. Seeds are arranged so that 2-3 g per 1 m2. The sowing depth should be about 1 cm. Between the beds leave a distance of 18-25 cm. The seeds are sometimes planted in summer, and the time is chosen so that the plant can produce a crop by autumn. In some cases, gardeners plant it in the fall. But it is important not to lose over time. Its first shoots should appear in spring, not in winter. Frost destroys the plant. Harvesting depends on the timing of planting. A good onion is harvested approximately 7-9 months after sowing the seeds.
  • For years of use, the batun is planted in the spring. The landing method is identical to the previous version: the depth is 1 cm and 2-3 g of seeds per 1 m2. In the second year, you can cut green shoots for the first time. By the time of collection, they should reach 20 cm. Such stems are juicy, green, useful and soft. Higher may be stiff. It is characteristic that the more often the green of the plant is cut, the more abundant it grows and the subsequent harvest becomes more and more. The last harvest of greens is carried out no later than 1 month before the onset of cold weather.

Experienced gardeners recommend soaking the seeds of onion batun for one day before planting in water. During this period, the water is changed 2-3 times. This is done in order to get the early shoots in 1-1.5 weeks. Otherwise, the seeds will germinate only after 2-3 weeks.

If it is necessary to speed up the time for obtaining the first harvest, the onion-batun under film is grown from April. The film is not removed until the first harvest. Thus, it is possible to accelerate the development of the plant by about 3 weeks, and increase the number of stems.

How to care?

Planting and cultivation of onion batun

Immediately after sowing, it is necessary to mulch the earth with humus. Then timely watering, removal of weeds is made. It is important to note that the abundance of moisture ensures the future leaves of the onion batun with juiciness and pleasant, delicate taste.

When the first shoots appeared, and each plant emptied out 3 leaves, they can be thinned out so that they are located 2-4 cm from each other, but this is only done with a perennial plant. If a batun is grown for one year, thinning is not necessary in order to harvest more. After thinning, fertilizers are applied to the ground, after having been diluted with water for irrigation. Subsequent care includes weeding the beds and watering them.

After a bountiful harvest, perennial plants survive the winter. In the spring, they are freed from dried and frozen shoots, the ground around them is loosened, fertilized with mineral complexes. This allows the plant to upgrade, and also lets the sun go down to it.
