Chickens Rhode Island is a breed bred by American breeders. Initially, it had a meat-egg direction, but later it began to be bred as a decorative bird. To date, chickens of this species have reduced productivity, but have not lost their popularity. With proper care, feeding, these birds are pleased not only by high egg production, but also by the pleasant taste of meat.

Breed history

The breeding of the Rhode Island chickens began in 1830 in the village of Adamsville, near the town of Little Compton. To obtain a new, meat-egg type, females were used: Brown Leggornov, Viandotov, Palevy Kohinkhinov, Cornish. The producer chose a black and red Malay rooster, originally from England.

Representatives of this species were brought to Russia only in 1926.

The breed was originally named Red Rhode Island; in 1880, Nathaniel Aldrich, a poultry farmer from Massachusetts, suggested a different name, Golf Buff, also often referred to as Chicken Tripp and Chicken John Macomber. But in 1895 at the exhibition these chickens were presented under the name "Rhode Island Red".

Officially, the breed was recognized in 1905. After that, they came to Europe and quickly spread to different countries. In those days, Rhode Island was the best universal breed. Representatives of this species were brought to Russia only in 1926.

Chickens of the genus Island have a rectangular body. The weight of an adult rooster can reach up to 4 kg, and hens - 3 kg, however, most often males weigh about 2.5 kg, and females are 500 g less. Maintenance and care

Only the outdoor method of keeping is used when breeding Rhode Island birds. For the cellular life of these birds are not adapted. At the same time, you need to be able to care for the breed in order to get maximum productivity from it.
