Liven calico breed of chickens was obtained as a result of popular selection. Throughout the long selection and cross-breeding with different species, this amazing bird has been obtained, suitable for any private farmstead. After the species was obtained, the bird in a short period of time became one of the most popular in Central Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and some other European countries.

In the post-war years, the Liven gingerbread breed of chickens was raised in poultry farms to increase the production of egg and meat products. But in the beginning of the 60s they started to forget about the breed, because they were replaced by more productive crosses. For example, leggorny began to be massively imported to poultry farms due to high productivity. By the 80s of the last century, the breed remained widespread only in private farmsteads, where it often crossed with other species.

There was a time when the breed was considered lost, but about 10 years ago they started talking about the Livonian calico hens again. Today they are primarily popular in the Poltava region of Ukraine. Many poultry farmers believe that local breeders have managed to keep several thoroughbreds and gradually increase their livestock. Today it is in the Poltava region for the most part purchased tribal individuals.

For years, the Liven cotton calico breed was considered the best and was bred in large poultry farms. Today, it is found on private farms, but what is its peculiarity and why do breeders often prefer it?

  • Egg production per year 200-220 eggs from one layer. At the same time, egg production in winter is not reduced.

  • Eggs are large, even those that are first in pullets, weigh at least 50 g, and those that follow 60-70 g. In the largest eggs that can weigh up to 100 g, there are usually 2 yolks. The shell is different shades of brown, white is rare.

Interesting!Interesting! Farmers believe that the size and quality of green consumed affects the size of eggs of this breed. Therefore, in the winter, it is advisable to give them grass meal or silage.

  • The testicles are very tasty, nutritious, have increased demand in the market due to the large size.

  • The weight of the carcass after slaughter and gutting comes to 3 kg, which is profitable for sale.

  • The meat is tender and tasty. True, if you do not pay proper attention to the feeding of birds, it can be tough, like any egg breed, but the taste itself, the juiciness does not suffer from this, it can simply be difficult to use.

  • The bird is unpretentious, most of the food in the summer finds on the range. The food is picky.

  • The Liven calico breed of chickens is resistant to many infections - it has a high viability. They rarely get sick, youngsters survive almost all of them, so breeding is very beneficial.

  • For winter frosts are adapted. It is better to warm the coop, of course, but on fine winter days they can even be let out for a walk.

  • Calico gourds are excellent chickens and moms. It is not necessary to follow the young at all - the hen does everything.

Everywhere has its own nuances, as here, and you need to consider them before buying Livensky breed.

  • For roosters should follow. If they don't like something, they can get into a fight. There have been cases when the roosters of this breed even rushed to the dogs!

  • Liven chickens chickens fledge long enough when compared with some other species. Therefore, they need more care and a warm room if they are displayed in an incubator. In case the brood is engaged in the hen-mom, there should be no problems.

Important!Important! Many breeders say that calico liven hens sometimes spit their eggs.

  • The full maturation of the bird occurs only 300 days after birth into the light. So they do not differ in precocity and many breeders do not like it.

  • At an early age, birds are shy, they can be very worried under any stress. But with age they become completely calm (in any case, chickens).

  • If there is not enough space in the chicken coop or there is not enough food, cannibalism may be observed.

  • When a bird divorces to get eggs, you need to drive the hens from the nest all the time and pick up the eggs as soon as the chickens demolish them, because the females incubate them almost constantly and this can lead to losses!

Features of growing and care

In order to successfully breed Liven calico calico, you need to know some of their features in terms of care and general cultivation standards.

  1. Liven calico breed of chickens does not like cramped rooms. The chicken coop is built more than usual, and the cellular content is generally undesirable!

  2. Walking settles on a mandatory basis for several reasons. The first - for liven hens is very important - they love to walk! The second is that it saves money, because in the summer it takes much less money to feed. The third - in the presence of walking increases egg production, and improves the taste of poultry meat.

Interesting!Interesting! If you throw a bit of horse manure on a winter walk, they almost completely eat it. Such a nutritional supplement will increase their immunity and egg production in the cold season.

  1. The winter house can be not insulated, but then egg production can decrease a little.

  2. The litter should always be dry and warm. In winter, the layer increases significantly so that chickens do not get cold.

  3. Nests are placed low, in a secluded corner, but so that chickens can get to them without problems.

  4. Perches are made by the number of birds. Since the Livonian calico breed of chickens has a considerable size, it’s not a good idea to save money on this issue.

  5. The diet should be abundant in calcium (shell, chalk) and phosphorus (fish meal, fish waste), then the cases of pecking eggs will be reduced to a minimum.

  6. For faster growth of chickens, special feed for young animals is introduced into the diet early. It is not cheap, but the chicks will grow noticeably faster.

  7. In the house should be a trough with sand and ash. These are beautiful birds, and in order for them to remain so, such a “bathhouse” is simply necessary for them.

Reviews of Livenskoy calico breed of chickens

Rare breeders are unhappy with Liven calico breed of chickens. As a rule, good reviews about them.

  • George Nikonov: “I've been keeping live hens for the third year. The chicken room did a lot, taking into account the increase in flocks. All the time there is a shell and chalk to feed, so that the eggshell is strong. They rush even in winter, not slowing down - very satisfied! For an average family, plenty and meat and eggs. "

  • Nikita Kuznetsov: "I love the Liven breed of chickens, but they cannot say that it is easy to care for. The main problem is cannibalism. But, as a rule, these chickens peck at those individuals who are sick or injured. I had a big cock when I trampled chickens, left on their backs there are scratches and they were pecked first of all. Now I keep only the smallest cocks (lungs), the rest are for slaughter - cases of cannibalism sharply decreased as soon as the sick chickens disappeared. "

  • Marina Rishetnyak: “I breed this breed not for the first year and quite successfully. Cannibalism was not observed. The only problem is that you need to take eggs in time, because you’ve already come across chickens a couple of times. A good breed, simple care, and the yard is decorated with its beautiful plumage."
